There is a quotation in the liner notes to Rachel’s --- Music For Egon Schiele by Arnold Schoenberg wherein he describes a work of music as: “These pieces can only be understood by those who believe that sound can say things which can only be expressed through sound.” The music of The Innocence Mission has that same capacity for those who are willing to listen. It is that moment in a song where the listener, following the picture painted by the singer, discovers that his/her own life appears between the words. The moment where prose becomes poetry.
These songs are unbelievably beautiful, shimmering like so many particles unleashed by the smashing of atoms, that disappear back into the fabric of the universe to be chased by physicists searching for the mind of God.
